All at sea

Is it really possible we have some folk so stupid as to actually believe that our navy and air force deliberately let SIEV-X sink in October? In case they didn't know, the sea covers a large area. Are they so mindless they believe these people could have been discovered, and reached in time to save them from drowning, when even the Indonesians didn't know where they were? And if they believe this, can I please be the first to sell them the Sydney Harbour Bridge?
