Previous Sandviken resident Khaleed Daoed sentenced by the jury in Australia

Previous Sandviken resident Khaleed Daoed is guilty of people-smuggling. This is the conclusion of the Australian jury after two day's discussions. This means he can now be sentenced to 20 years prison.

The three week long trial against the Iraqi refugee and previous Sandviken resident Khaleed Daoed is now over. After many days discussions, the jury in The High Court in Brisbane, Australia, concluded that the 37 year old Khaleed Daoed was guilty of people-smuggling.

353 people died
He was accused of two offences but sentenced for only one, whereby a refugee boat from Indonesia sank out in the middle of the ocean on route to Australia and 353 people were killed. Daoed considers himself not guilty of having caused the refugees' deaths in the tradegy in 2001 - only of being an assistant to an Egyptian who earlier was convicted of being the head man behind the illegal refugee journeys.

He received seven years prison in Egypt, whilst the crime that Daoed has been found guilty of can lead to a total of 20 years prison according to the Australian laws regarding people-smuggling.

Has continuously denied
Daoed has constantly denied the charges and says that he only helped the Iraqi refugees who found themselves in Indonesia with amongst other things, interpreting and other humanitarian help since he was classed as a so called UN-refugee and therefore had the possibility to move freely. The sentencing will be pronounced on June 24, and it is not until then that it will be clear what his punishment will be.

Big impact
The conviction was big news in the Australian media yesterday as the tradegy with the refugee boat Siev X has opened eyes to the handling of refugees which continues... and subsequently has become a big political question.

No answers
Organisations which are engaged in the matter consider that a guilty verdict against Daoed doesn't mean that they have got the answer to a row of questions regarding the tragegy.

Among other things, many of those who witnessed against Daoed during the trial described how they saw boats come near to the place where the Siev X sank but that the boats never came up to help the people who ended up in the water for 20 hours before 45 of them were finally rescued.

Police were present
Many refugees have also explained how Indonesian police were present when the refugees were taken onboard the little, overloaded fishing boat before departure.

Förre Sandvikenbon Khaleed Daoed är skyldig till människosmuggling. Det kom den austaliensiska juryn fram till efter två dagars överläggningar. Det innebär att han nu kan dömas till 20 års fängelse.

Den tre veckor långa rättegången mot den irakiska flyktingen och tidigare Sandvikenbon Khaleed Daoed är nu över. Efter flera dagar överläggningar kom juryn i högsta domstolen i Brisbane, Australien fram till att 37-årige Khaleed Daoed gjort sig skyldig till människosmuggling.

353 människor dog
Han var åtalad för två fall, men döms bara för ett, då en flyktingbåt från Indonesien sjönk mitt ute på vattnet på väg till Australien och 353 människor omkom. Daoed anses dock inte skyldig till att ha orsakat flyktingarnas död i tragedin 2001 - utan att ha varit medhjälpare till en egyptier som sedan tidigare dömts för att vara huvudmannen bakom de illegala flyktingresorna. Han fick sju års fängelse i Egypten, medan det brott man nu fastställt att Daoed gjort sig skyldig till kan leda till hela 20 års fängelse enligt de austaliensiska lagarna när det gäller människosmuggling.

Har nekat hela tiden
Daoed har hela tiden nekat till anklagelserna och säger att han bara hjälpt de irakiska flyktingar som befann sig i Indonesien med bland annat översättning och annan humanitär hjälp eftersom han klassats som så kallas FN-flykting och därför hade möjlighet att röra sig fritt. Den slutliga domen avkunnas först 24 juni och först då står det klart vilket straff han får.

Stort genomslag
Den fällande domen var en stor nyhet i de australiensiska medierna i går eftersom tragedin med flyktingbåten Siev X har öppnat ögonen för den flyktinghandel som ständigt pågår och därmed har det blivit en stor politisk fråga.

Får inga svar
Organisationer som engagerat sig i frågan anser att en fällande dom mot Daoed inte innebär att de fått svar på en rad frågor som har med tragedin att göra. Bland annat har flera av de personer som vittnade mot Daoed under rättegången berättat hur de såg båtar närma sig platsen där Siev X sjönk men hur båtarna aldrig kom fram för att hjälpa de människor som blev liggande i vattnet i 20 timmar innan 45 av dem till slut räddades.

Många flyktingar har också berättat hur indonesisk polis var med när flyktingarna togs ombord på den lilla överfulla fiskebåten före avfärd.
